MAB receives homage at release of Human Rights Report

Published annually by the Rede Social de Justiça e Direitos Humanos (Social Network of Justice and Human Rights) the release of the 14th edition of the Report on Human Rights 2013, happened this Tuesday (3 December) in São Paulo.

The report is organized by the Rede Social and published in book, contents various articles written by people involved in social organizations workin with Human Rights in different areas.

This year have adressed issues on agrarian reform, agro-toxics, indigenous, quilombolas, immigrants and dam-affected people’s rights, mental health, Truth Commission (Commission on the State crimes during dictatorship), obstetric violence, anti-mental institution struggle, communication democratization and the recent June protests.

Besides the release of the report, Rede Social honored Cáritas Arquidiocesana de São Paulo – CASP, Movimento Passe Livre – MPL (Movement Free Pass) and the Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens – MAB (Movement of People Affected by Dams) as examples of struggle experiences for Human Rights in Brazil.

Member of MAB’s national coordination, Cristiane Nadaletti, received the homage in name of MAB; she pointed out to our National Meeting: “In September of this year, we gathered more than 2500 affected people of Brazil in São Paulo. And, in addition to our struggle for the rights of the affected populations, by pressing the approval of the National Policy of Rights, we put the struggle for national sovereignty as prior for the working class “.

Also received the homage, Cáritas which works with refugees. Today, the city of São Paulo host 50% of the refugees and asylum seekers of Brazil. Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns is remembered as one of the precursors of this work.

At last, but not least, the Movimento Passe Livre (MPL) also received homage for its protagonism at one of the largest wave of mobilization since Diretas Já, through the protests against the increase of the fare of collective transport.
