After a long process the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB) gained tanks for the affected families. The project benefits 610 families in the states of Minas Gerais, Ceará, Bahia, Pernambuco, Para, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Parana and Rondonia.

In the Northeast 267 tanks will be built in the communities of the Vale do São Francisco.

Celso Rodriguez, a militant of the MAB in Pernambuco, says that “through the project families can store rainwater for human consumption. This will offer them pure and unpolluted water, because the water from the São Francisco River is polluted by the poison of the agrobusines”. Moreover “this project is helping to organize the MAB families in the region.”

For Grace Silva, hit by the dam Castanhão and coordinator of grassroots group “the project will greatly improve community life, because before we had to go a long way to fetch water in the reservoirs and now we have the rain on the doorstep”.

It also highlights the role of the cisterns to strengthen the Movement “the project will made it easier organizing the families because they are having now concrete gains and understand that only through organized struggle they can have great achievements.”
