Concessions of energy: not privatize, lower the price of electricity and recover the rights of workers and affected populations

The movements and organizations articulated in the Platform of Workers and Peasants for Energy launched November, 18 in Paulo Afonso, (state of Bahia) a campaign for the renewal of concessions in the electricity sector, that will expire between 2015 and 2017.

The organizations understand that new auctions mean further privatization of the sector and thereby worsen the quality of services, increasing the price of electricity, increase the exploitation of workers and backward in acknowledging the rights of affected populations.

The expiring concessions represent 23% of the generation capacity, 74% of the transmission and 33% of the distribution of electricity. Most of the contracts of generation are under the control of state enterprises, such as Chesf, Furnas, Eletronorte, CESP, Cemig and Copel. Therefore many business sectors, such as Fiesp (Federation of Industries of São Paulo) and Abracel (Brazilian Association of Large Industrial Energy Consumers) are advocating the implementation of the auctions or in reality their privatization.
