After a protest in front of the Santo Antônio Energia, in Porto Velho, the people affected by the dam of Santo Antônio of theTriangle neighborhood were received by the company for negotiations. However, the company refused to meet the agenda of the families who lost their homes after the floodings caused by the dam at the river Madeira.
The families required the recognition of 118 affected families as “affected directly downstream” and the collective bargaining for compensations for the damages. Already passed six months that the dam caused landslides in the slopes of the Madeira River, reaching the families in the Triangle and forced them to live today in hotels in Porto Velho, without a definitive answer to their problems.
During the negotiations the company made clear that she does not want to discuss new housing and will not open space for bargaining the proposed compensation. “We must work to build a proposal based on compensation. There will not been constructed new homes” said Ivan, director of the Santo Antônio Energia.
The consortium says they are prohibited to negotiate directly with the families and also do not recognize all families as affected by the construction works.
For the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB), the company’s position at the hearing is a denial of housing rights. “We will continue guiding the need for direct negotiations with the families, reaffirming the agenda as presented and demanding the rights denied” said Océlio Muniz of MAB.
