At the end of January was held the 1st Meeting of Women Affected by Dams of the river São Francisco. Under the theme “Women in the struggle for a new Peoples Energy Project “, the activity took place at the School for Excellence in Higher Education Edit Matos (EREMPEM) in Santa Maria da Boa Vista (EP). About 150 women discussed problems caused by dam constructions they experienced daily. Also issues related to gender were studied like women’s health and women in the working world, assisted by Mark Tully, doctor and militant of the Consulta Popular, and Rita de Cássia, of the coordination of the National Small Farmers Movement (MPA).
The event began with a mystical event, bearing in mind the spaces occupied by women in the Brazilian society, the rights that are denied by the construction companies of dams and the female resistance.
The activity was attended by representatives of the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST) of the states of Bahia and Pernambuco, the Pastoral da Juventude do Meio Popular (PJMP), representatives of the municipal councils of Curaçá (BA) and Santa Maria da Boa Vista (PE) and the Department of Social Development in Santa Maria da Boa Vista.
