Around 600 people affected by dam of Tucuruí returned to block the highway BR 422, which gives access to the dams, this Monday (July 1st). The protesters had blocked the highway also on last week Friday, and because they did not had an answer from the government they returned to block the highway.
They demand the accomplishment of the Development Plan for the region, agreed with Eletronorte since 2005, but until today it has not come out of the paper. They also demand the construction of popular houses, projects to develop the fishing, regularization of lands, among other demands.
Besides the federal government agenda, also request to negotiate with Tucuruí town hall. They request the reduction of the bus fare, which is now R$2,25, for R$2,00, the return of six months of maternity-licence for public workers (which recently changed to 4 months) and the paving of secondary roads in the settlements of the municipality.
Protesters are blocking the highway in a system for half an hour and release the vehicle for 10 minutes. It is expected to remain until an answer of Eletronorte.
At the protest participates MAB, teachers unions, public servants, farm workers and the movement “Wake Tucuruí”, inspired by the wave of demonstrations started in the big cities and now takes the cities from the countryside.
