The Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB) exhibited a model of solar panel at the People’s Summit. This popular technology was mounted in the Tent of Tomorrow and attrracted a lot of attention of participants and also of residents of Rio de Janeiro.
The solar panels work with a technology developed by the Sociedade do Sol (Society of the Sun) and heat water for domestic use. “The experiment of the MAB is in tune with the proposal of the People’s Summit, because it is a solution for generating heat and saving electricity that does not destroy the environment and not cause social impacts, unlike other energy sources, “says Verílson Gheno, member of the MAB in Paraná.
MAB has been implementing solar panels in the three southern states of Brazil, and also in Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais. The technology is being developed since January 1999 based in the Technology Business Incubator Center, University of Sao Paulo.
“We want to make this system of heating water known by the people and popularize its implementation, since, in addition to preserving the environment, the system reduces energy consumption and therefore reduce the value of the household energy bill,” says Verílson. The intent of MAB is that the technology may be adopted as a public policy, because it is also a form of income distribution.
The deployment of the solar panel in the People’s Summit had the support of several organizations, including the Foundation Bank of Brazil and Christian Aid.
