People Affected by Belo Monte need to be recognized!

Norte Energia concluded the register of 7790 affected families by the dam of Belo Monte at the urban area of Altamira. To be registered by the company is the first step to guarantee the right for housing at the resettlement. But many people were not registered!

These people are: people that knowing that they would be affected they gave up in building their own house and have paid house rent or went living with other relatives; those who build their house just after the register; those who live in flood areas which are never identified; or even those, which considered as visitor at their relatives house were not considered at the registration.

Now, Norte Energia is saying that the priority is to move to the resettlement the families that are registered. The company refuses to attend these other families and even called them opportunists. The company does not consider that these occupations were motivated due to the consequences of the construction of Belo Monte: increase of the house rent.

The house mooving of registered families are already happening. The Norte Energia rushes because knows will not benefit its operating license if the company does not remove all the registerd families. But families without registration are invisible to the company and the licensing agencies. They are at risk of staying behind and having to go out with the lake water invading their homes.

This situation seems unlikely to you? For the history of the construction of dams in Brazil, other dam lakes have filled while there were still people living, for example at Santo Antonio dam in Rondonia, in Tocantins, and at Castanhão in Ceará, among others.

That is why the families participating in the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB), invite all to support our struggle. We want to be recognized as affected by Belo Monte! We want resettlement for all those affected!
