The Peoples’ Summit, organized by social movements parallel to the Rio +20, ended last Friday (22). More than ten days of debates and manifestations were attended by approximately 30,000 people. In the final document, the activists point “the urgent challenge of stopping the new phase of capitalism.” They also advocate new relationships between humans and nature.
The social movements consider that the UN Conference Rio +20 repeated “the bankrupt script of false solutions advocated by the same actors who caused the global crisis.”
On this point, the coordinator of the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB), Formica Robson, believes that there are no exits within the current system.
“The population, social movements and activists, should seek to build on their organizations and networks, with new perspectives to the issues of mining and energy. The false solutions proposted by green economy or green capitalism are not going to solve the people’s problems. We are not willing to build alternatives to the economic crisis, we are willing to build a new model of society.”
Another topic discussed at the event was feminism. Ligia Bensadon, member of the Brazilian Solidarity Economy Forum, said “To change the world, we have to change the space of women who have to take the power and be protagonists as well as men: the same rights and same access. With more women acting, denouncing violence, and author and organizing productive in groups. “
